Castillo de San José - MIAC
The Castillo de San José is an impressive 18th-century fortress overlooking the port of Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). Locally known as the “Fortress of Hunger”, it seamlessly blends military history, contemporary art, and stunning views.
History
- Built between 1776 and 1779 under King Carlos III.
- Originally designed to defend the island against pirate attacks.
- Constructed during a period of severe famine to provide employment to the local population — earning it the nickname Fortress of Hunger (Fortaleza del Hambre).
- Fell into disrepair in the mid-20th century before being meticulously restored in the 1970s.
International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC)
In 1976, under the visionary supervision of Lanzarote’s most famous artist, César Manrique, the fortress was transformed into the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC). Manrique’s intervention is a masterclass in sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse, preserving the fortress’s historic character while creating bright, modern exhibition spaces within the original military structure.
