César Manrique Foundation
The César Manrique Foundation, housed in the artist's former residence, is essential for understanding Lanzarote's unique aesthetic and cultural identity. This remarkable house was built into five volcanic bubbles created by lava flows, demonstrating Manrique's vision of harmony between art, architecture, and nature.
The residence consists of two levels: a conventional upper floor with white walls and large windows offering island views, and an extraordinary lower level where five volcanic caves have been transformed into living spaces. Each cave is uniquely decorated and connected by tunnels, creating a surreal underground home that feels both natural and sophisticated.
The foundation displays a collection of Manrique's artwork, including paintings, sculptures, and sketches, as well as works by other contemporary artists from his personal collection. The exhibitions change periodically, and the space includes pieces by Picasso, Miró, and Tàpies.
The surrounding gardens showcase Manrique's landscape design philosophy, with native plants, volcanic rock formations, and carefully placed sculptures creating a peaceful oasis. The site offers insight into the mind of the man who shaped Lanzarote's unique visual identity and fought to preserve its natural beauty.
