Timanfaya National Park is one of Lanzarote's most iconic attractions and an absolute must-visit for anyone coming to the island. This otherworldly landscape was formed by volcanic eruptions between 1730-1736 and 1824, covering a quarter of the island in lava.

The park offers a unique opportunity to witness the aftermath of volcanic activity up close. The landscape is dominated by dramatic lava fields, volcanic cones, and craters in shades of red, orange, and black. The geothermal activity is still present beneath the surface, with temperatures reaching 400°C just a few meters below ground.

Visitors can take a guided bus tour through the Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego), which provides stunning views and access to areas otherwise restricted to protect the fragile ecosystem. At the El Diablo restaurant, you can watch demonstrations where park rangers pour water into holes in the ground, creating instant geysers, and even see food being cooked using geothermal heat.

The park's alien landscape has been used as a filming location for various movies. Visiting at sunset provides particularly dramatic lighting for photography. Note that independent walking is not permitted in most areas to preserve the volcanic landscape.
