Timanfaya Volcano Tour
The Timanfaya Volcano Tour offers a fascinating journey into one of the world's most impressive volcanic landscapes. This guided experience takes you through the Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego), where volcanic forces remain active just below the surface.
The tour begins at the park entrance where guides share the dramatic history of the 1730-1736 eruptions that buried entire villages and transformed a quarter of the island. You'll board a coach for the famous "Route of the Volcanoes," a carefully designed road that winds through the most spectacular volcanic scenery.
At the El Diablo restaurant area, guides demonstrate the intense geothermal heat still present underground. Water poured into boreholes instantly converts to steam shooting several meters high, and dry brush ignites spontaneously when placed in volcanic fissures. The ground temperature just below the surface exceeds 400°C.
The landscape is otherworldly - a Mars-like terrain of volcanic cones, solidified lava rivers, and colorful mineral deposits. The scale of devastation and the raw power of volcanic forces is humbling. The area remains largely unchanged since the eruptions, preserved as a national park and biosphere reserve.
The El Diablo restaurant, designed by César Manrique, uses volcanic heat as a giant natural grill. While dining is optional, the architecture alone is worth seeing. The tour provides essential context for understanding Lanzarote's volcanic nature and why the island looks unlike anywhere else on Earth.
